GREENVILLE EVENTS
The Thoreau Wabanaki Trail Festival in Greenville has truly deepened my appreciation of the greater Moosehead Region. The festival provides such valuable opportunities to discover the cultural and historical connections that make the area unique and special. Each of the programs I attended were led by genuine experts in their topics which made the experience especially memorable. It was so worth the trip and I eagerly look forward to my next visit to the Moosehead Region to learn more about its fascinating natural and cultural heritage. Taking extra time to discover local points of interest on your own combined with festival programs makes for a dream vacation!
THE PENOBSCOT TRIP
The Penobscot Ways in the Woods and Waters river trip was an incredible and inspiring opportunity to learn about Penobscot culture. The immersive cultural programming on Sugar Island helped elevate my understanding of the past, present, and future of the tribe and I’ll continue to reflect on this valuable experience for years to come. The canoe journey evoked a deep sense for why the Penobscot River is so vital and provides an enduring way of life for so many. I’m certain Thoreau would be contented knowing curious travelers continue to trace his famed journey–guided both by his wisdom and an interest in Penobscot culture.

I’ve participated in the Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail Festival every year since it started in 2007. The Festival has given me so much knowledge and so many experiences I couldn’t have found anywhere else. I’ve learned from experts in the natural history of the Moosehead region and gained new insight into the meaning of Thoreau’s work. For me, the best part has been the opportunity to learn directly from Penobscot historians, artisans, musicians, storytellers, and guides about their ancient traditions, the depth of their relationship with the land, and the insights their culture offers into problems we face in the world today.

I can’t say enough about the Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail Festival’s Penobscot trip. I have been on it 3 times now. Our Penobscot tribe hosts were always most generous and informative with their time and knowledge. They shared their culture, helped us improve our paddling skills with endless patience and gave us a fully immersive experience. They also planned our activities and campfire meals with great care, taught us about their long history, exposed us to hauntingly beautiful songs and stories, and brought over the magnificent birch bark canoe for us to learn about and even experience paddling. The participants come from many walks of life yet find common interests and passions, creating a tight knit group who becomes surprisingly close in the very short period of time we are together.
The canoeing is not as challenging as you might think. It’s definitely an accomplishment, but very doable as I am turning 70 this year and many participants were a fair bit older than I and handled it easily. I can’t think of any other program that offers such an immersive, yet fun and rewarding experience.
