One side of the map shows the water and woods routes; the other side provides a Wabanaki perspective, written by James E. Francis, Sr., Penobscot Nation Cultural and Historic Preservation Director and a Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail Festival Board Member. It also includes essays about Penobscot guides Joseph Attean and Joe Polis, both of whom influenced Thoreau’s perception and understanding about Native life. Joseph Attean became the first elected chief of the Penobscot Nation. The map is printed on weather-proofed coated paper.
