NOTE ~ A possible new trip is being considered for a guided three-day canoe journey down the traditional Wabanaki water route of the West Branch of the Penobscot River to Lobster Lake ending in Chesuncook Lake. July 18-20, 2027! This precedes the annual Thoreau-Wabanaki programs in Greenville and with the Penobscot tribe July 21-27. This week-long exploration of the Moosehead North Woods interior landscape would make a most inspired traveler’s destination experience, led directly by indigenous cultural keepers and regional guides.

This year marks the 170th anniversary of American naturalist writer Henry David Thoreau’s 1857 final trip into the North Woods, which inspired his classic “The Maine Woods” and the nation’s call back to Nature.

July 2027 will celebrate that journey with new experiences over the same geography. What is the same? What is different?
